<p class="p1">A 100 mile trail run.</p>
<p class="p2">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="p1">The idea was to take this year off, relax after having slammed hard at Ultra distance triathlons for a couple years.&nbsp; However after only a month off I was itching to do more.&nbsp; What the hell do you do after an Ultra distance triathlon???&nbsp; Well why not just an Ultra distance marathon?&nbsp; There are two reasons for choosing to do a 100 miler (i really don't like the ultra distance marathon naming because it can be any distance from 27 to 100000 miles) &nbsp;</p>
<p class="p2">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="p1">The first reason being that my running has sucked lately, mostly because I have become lazy and bored by it.&nbsp; The second being I feel like a ton a people I know have done 100 milers so why the hell not me.&nbsp; In my head it feels like everyone around me has done one and that im the guy standing around going &ldquo;O I&rsquo;ve only done 140.6&trade; triathlons&rdquo; and yes I actually say &trade; out loud.&nbsp; I know this is wrong, I know this is stupid, but that is what is going on in my head.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="p2">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="p1">Which 100 miler is it going to be, well this is a little bit more sticky of a subject for me.&nbsp; I really want to do Leadville, its the most bad ass hard core rip your throat out and really in all honestly skull fuck you races out there.&nbsp; The only problem is its in colorado and that would be bringing all my CREW out for support.&nbsp; If I really, really really wanted to do that I have a feeling that they would haul out there and it would be bad ass.&nbsp; However the Money and time commitment for that is just ridiculous and stupid, at least for right now (come on lotto). &nbsp;</p>
<p class="p2">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="p1">Instead I have my eyes on two local races with a third crazy idea.&nbsp; The two races are the Old Dominion 100 that is in june and the Massanutten 100 in august I believe.&nbsp; The problem is that the Massanutten race requires a 50 mile pre qualifying race done by dec 2011 for the 2012 100 and apparently it fills up super fast and from what I have read online the only way to get in is by blowing a guy that knows a guy that knows a guy (of course I&rsquo;m exaggerating).&nbsp; As of right now the old dominion 100 website is down but I believe it too requires a 50 mile pre qualifying race.&nbsp; Now this delves into an entire sub set of neuroses that I have about hoops you have to jump through in order to give someone money to do something completely stupid&nbsp; and subsequently people that want huge crowds when they do races, different conversation different day.&nbsp; Leading us to option three which day by day sounds like more and more fun.</p>

<p class="p1">100 miles down/up the Appalachian trail.</p>
<p class="p2">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="p1">Skip the fucking middle man, skip the fucking RD&rsquo;s (whom I&rsquo;m sure are great people and have nothing but peoples health and safety in mind) just pull it old school adventure style and get on one of the oldest trails in the country and FUCKING GO!</p>

<p class="p1">Day 2 of SLB was the trip over to Puerto Del Leon, a 2.5 hour bike ride along a wonderful ridge line overlooking the valley until you get to the top of the climb. &nbsp;Then you Descend for 900 Meters down into the City of Malaga, it is this wonderful 30 min decent. &nbsp;You get to look out over the Mediterranean and the city all at the same time, to the point of you forget about the switch backs and find yourself drifting into the wrong lane sometimes.</p>

<p>Today started off with a very early morning swim. &nbsp;woke up tired got the dregs of the coffee and out the door we went. &nbsp;i havent swum sense Rev3 Cedar point 3. &nbsp;needless to say it was a hard day. &nbsp;1 mile swim with the shoulders and body screaming the entire swim! &nbsp;We then headed back and got ready for the solid ride today. &nbsp;Todays ride was the Fuente its this wonderfull 2 hour ride along this wonderfull ridge (video soon) then you get to this cafe, its the cafe at the top of the climb. &nbsp;we chilled out for a while then we go downhill for 30 min none stop, you have to make sure you have fresh breakpads when you do this climb. &nbsp;we drop down 3,500 feet hit the bottom sea level, then turn right around and head back up.</p>
<p>I felt solid on the ride out super great had a great time heading down, hit the turn around headed back up and for the first 3 miles (of 11) felt solid, then everything just unfolded as the miles ticked off, everyone in the pack caught me and passed me and i struggled harder and harder up the hill. &nbsp;i got to the top after 1.5 hours 20 min slower then last year. &nbsp;the weather was moving in and the sun was setting, i made the summit and the group was already packing 7 people in the van to head home and 6 of us started to head home on the bikes. &nbsp;we left imediatly. this was suppose to be my 20 min recover / lunch but we didnt have time and we headed off.</p>
<p>tired and hungry we started the ride back, as the time went i just fell more and more apart as we rode on. &nbsp;Grant and i both totally cooked slowly make our way back as the wind HOWLED at about 30-40 mph making us do track stands as we went down hill because it slowed us down soo much. it hurt it hurt hard. near the end i wanted to lay down in the ditch and just die.</p>
<p>at the top of the last hill the van shows up to collect us and we hop into it, i promis Johns dad a hug when we get back because i was so happy he showed up for us.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>today i got up and walked down the stairs and the outside of my knee hurts. &nbsp;i saddled up my bike just to take a look and knee pain, so hopping it would take a little time and my leg would warm up i went out with the fast group. &nbsp;the warm up consisted of a 20 mph pace line trying to catch up to group 1 we went up a couple of hills and the knee just never warmed up. &nbsp;with the suggestion of some of the rodes i pulled the plug. i was not happy at all about this. &nbsp;1 hour into a 5.5 hour ride and i had to pull the plug.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>i took apart the bike and put it in the van and hung out with BIG John and we chilled and relaxed for 5 hours. &nbsp;today was not a special climb day but today is one of those days that when you finish you had a great FUCKIN day, so i was a little pissed we got back and i iced the knee and then after dinner anna stuck kneedles in my knee then stuck needles in my back. &nbsp;both of which DID WONDERS!! im hoping after riding zafaria she will stick more needles in my leg!</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">PICO, PICO, PICO - DEGIO</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">for some people this is another day on the bike, for me this is something special. &nbsp;This is the reason i come to SLB this is the Big Show for me. &nbsp;Before this day camp has been hard, i havent been living up to my own expectations, i was 10 min off my fuente dela renie time from last year i was 1 min off of my porta del sole time from last year. &nbsp;i came into camp weaker then i wanted and as i climbed Del Sole i was debating if i was even going to be able to do PICO. &nbsp;the rest day helped a lot and we piled into the vans and drove the hour to the base of the climb.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">when i am in spain i dont listen to music. &nbsp;the entire point is to disconnect from the rest of the world enjoy being out by yourself and with others talking about what is going on and focusing on the actual task at hand which is riding your bike! &nbsp;this year after conversationw with people and because PICO is my Big thing i went with music.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">we get to the base of the mountain i put on my gear strap on the helmet cam pop in the music and we start the ride through the little town before you hit the start. &nbsp;my heart rate was at 190 and we were not even climbing yet!!! &nbsp;The climbing this year was amazing i didnt have the POP in my legs during the climb that i am used to but im curious how much of that is from the tri bike and how much of it is from having no power in my legs. &nbsp;i hit my nutrition perfectly and was powering through the entire climb i felt so good after the climb when we got back i put in a 5k</p>

<p>Today we slept in had several cups of coffee sat around the living room in the plush couches and shot the shit about riding past experiences racing and opinions on various topics that would come up. &nbsp;those conversations are some of the main reasons i love coming to this camp is the amount of knowladge and experience is great and even people just getting into the sport have things to share with people that have been doing it for 11 years.</p>
<p>we then headed into Antequera to watch the end of a several day stage race were team radio shack had the lead coming in. we had lunch in what looked like a main square open to the air we just laid back and soaked in the sun as much as we could. &nbsp;we then worked our way over to the climb into the city a 13% beast for 1/3 of mile, it was kind of nice seeing a bunch of pros suffering and having a look on their face like i do trying to do the same thing. &nbsp;of course it helps that they had just ridden 100 miles before that climb.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">1000 meter swim in the morning early start got the cameras out and got some awesome underwater footage, then we headed back for an amazing solid ride, &nbsp;5,000 feet of climbing solid decents and then massive climbs constant and hard, then for shits and giggles we got back to the house threw on the shoes and out the door and a solid 3 mile run and 30 pushups!</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">UGH, today was an easy day, if you call 3 hours of moving time, 2,330 feet of climbing and a strech of road that i left part of myself on trying to attack and fight Grant and John Hirsch as we flew on the downhill! Then we hit the bottom and like anything that happens in spain when you get to the bottom you have to pay for it, and we climbed and climbed and climbed. &nbsp;but it was actually fairly easy and relaxed and much needed after getting murdered yesterday!</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Today started off with a very early morning swim. &nbsp;woke up tired got the dregs of the coffee and out the door we went. &nbsp;i havent swum sense Rev3 Cedar point 3. &nbsp;needless to say it was a hard day. &nbsp;1 mile swim with the shoulders and body screaming the entire swim! &nbsp;We then headed back and got ready for the solid ride today. &nbsp;Todays ride was the Fuente its this wonderfull 2 hour ride along this wonderfull ridge (video soon) then you get to this cafe, its the cafe at the top of the climb. &nbsp;we chilled out for a while then we go downhill for 30 min none stop, you have to make sure you have fresh breakpads when you do this climb. &nbsp;we drop down 3,500 feet hit the bottom sea level, then turn right around and head back up.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">I felt solid on the ride out super great had a great time heading down, hit the turn around headed back up and for the first 3 miles (of 11) felt solid, then everything just unfolded as the miles ticked off, everyone in the pack caught me and passed me and i struggled harder and harder up the hill. &nbsp;i got to the top after 1.5 hours 20 min slower then last year. &nbsp;the weather was moving in and the sun was setting, i made the summit and the group was already packing 7 people in the van to head home and 6 of us started to head home on the bikes. &nbsp;we left imediatly. this was suppose to be my 20 min recover / lunch but we didnt have time and we headed off.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">tired and hungry we started the ride back, as the time went i just fell more and more apart as we rode on. &nbsp;Grant and i both totally cooked slowly make our way back as the wind HOWLED at about 30-40 mph making us do track stands as we went down hill because it slowed us down soo much. it hurt it hurt hard. near the end i wanted to lay down in the ditch and just die.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">at the top of the last hill the van shows up to collect us and we hop into it, i promis Johns dad a hug when we get back because i was so happy he showed up for us.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">so this is day 1 of SLB 2011, &nbsp;the first day of travel was not bad. &nbsp;me being the endless romantic that i am i gave up my isle bulke head seat for what i thought was a regular window seat that turned into a middle regular seat. &nbsp;but the carma gods came back to me and the steward offered me the center seat of the END exit row meaning i had 4 feet of room in front of me. &nbsp;6 hours later i was in paris making the mad dash all the way accross the entire airport to get on the plane to malag. &nbsp;a nice little 2 hour hop and BAM right in the hear of Malaga spain. &nbsp;chilled relaxed and had an AMAZING dinner cooked by the ever wonderfull cook Holisticguru <a href="http://www.liveandeatbetter.com">www.liveandeatbetter.com</a>&nbsp;then off to bed.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">this morning was a nice 10k run followed by putting my bike together and then the warm up bike ride that is day 1 check out the numbers above! &nbsp;Also got a new nickname. &nbsp;Big Sexy Bobby, given to me by Miss Murder herself!!! &nbsp;at first i just kind of laughed but after a couple min i found i really liked it! So because the WTC is being a bunch of douche bages and sense i am diluting their brand (because im SOOO popular! &nbsp;as i told grant during a ride, "i am a minor internet celebraty after all lololololol")</p>

<p class="p1">Please be carful. this video is very shaky, it was my first time trying to capture a training camp and i learned a lot i promise it will get better next year.</p>
<p class="p1">In February of 2010 i went to spain to train with a group of people i had just only met.&nbsp; their enthusiasm and love of triathlon sold me on the trip.&nbsp; what you are about to watch is the best i could do to capture the amazing and breathtaking time i had while i was in spain.&nbsp; i learned a lot about cycling but i learned even more about myself. &nbsp;</p>
<p class="p1">i left spain the fittest i had ever been in my life.&nbsp; but it was not the fitness that was the ultimate take away from the camp.&nbsp; it was the mental toughness that i got from SLB that really got me through the season.&nbsp; wether is was the 4th weekend in a row of doing a 100 mile ride by myself on the exact same coarse in 100 degree heat.&nbsp; or talking myself through the hellacious run at <a href="http://www.rev3tri.com">Rev 3 Quassy</a> when i thought my heart might explode.&nbsp; The mental toughness i learned in spain paid back in spades!&nbsp;</p>
